Kelis is giving us all kinds of fab and glam in the new 60’s inspired photo-shoot for sun glass company Grey Ant. The singer who interviewed for Elle magazine opened up about the campaign and her contentiously evolving fashion sense and her dope culinary skills. Peep the snaps and excerpts below!
How did you get involved in this campaign?
One of my best friends works for Grey Ant, so when she called me, it was basically a no-brainer. You don’t say no to your dearest friend. But I’m so glad I got involved, because when I got to the photo shoot, I saw what they had planned: these incredible wigs, this totally ‘60s makeup. It was really cool.
Is your personal style less retro?
Oh, it’s way more subdued, especially with the makeup. I don’t really use a lot on my face. Sometimes my skin gets a little dry, but unless I’m performing, I keep it really natural. So to get all ‘Mad Men’ for the ads was fun… and I kept the wigs. They’re coming on tour!
Would you ever go blonde for real?
Uh-uh. Why do all that when you can use a wig? Some people get a little nervous about them, I guess, but why? Go for the wig. Don’t be afraid. [Laughing]
Since your album is called ‘Food,’ will you be cooking for your audiences on tour?
Oh no! That would be funny, though! Sometimes we’ve done food pairings at events for the album, but I think the audience at my concert wants to dance, right? Although sometimes I think, ‘What if we had lots of food trucks come to the venue?’
You could turn your tour bus into a food truck?
I try to make time to cook when I’m on tour whenever I can. It’s a really balancing thing, especially when you’re traveling a lot. If I know I have a few days in one location, I’ll make sure I’m somewhere with a kitchen so I can cook myself. And I do cook on the tour bus, sometimes.
Do you have a signature tour bus dish?
You know, for me it’s about the ingredients. I start with the ingredients and that’s how I decide what I’m going to cook—whatever’s fresh, whatever’s available. But the logistics of cooking on a bus—I mean, sure, you’re limited. You can’t have a barbecue. But if you have good, fresh ingredients, you can get creative.
