Missy Elliott continues to prove her icon status, and just had a street named after her AND was given the key to the city in her hometown.

Portsmouth, VA where the award-winning rapper was born and raised, has renamed a portion of McLean Street as Missy Elliott Boulevard and presented her with a key to the city.

“We’re beyond proud of Missy’s accomplishments and so thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate her right here in her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia,” said Portsmouth City Manager Tonya Chapman. “Missy’s trailblazing career is a testament that when you dream big, anything is possible. We’re excited to celebrate her and rename this street in her honor.

Missy Elliott was presented the honor on Monday (Oct. 17) by city leaders and the Portsmouth community for the official renaming ceremony, and parade to celebrate art, culture, and music from Portsmouth.

The Portsmouth City Council voted unanimously to rename a portion of the current street to “Missy Elliott Boulevard.” The street, currently named McLean Street, serves the Victory Crossing Shopping Center, Tidewater Community College, and the future Portsmouth Rivers Casino.

Missy took to social media to share snaps from the event this week.
